Support for Universal Hearing Screening of Infants in Canada

Many Canadians are putting their weight behind a proposal for universal hearing screenings for newborns, including heavy hitters like the Canadian Paediatric Society. Both the United States and the United Kingdom have national screening programs, unlike Canada, which has universal screening in only six provinces: British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

The Paediatric Society recently issued a statement backing the plan and a current commentary published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal outlines the reasons many believe the screening tests are necessary.
